Coffee and Company
I have nothing against Starbucks. It serves its purpose of as a fast food like venue for coffee and the like. Still, there is nothing like a local coffee shop when it comes to getting your coffee right and a bit more. Case in point, there is a local coffee shop here in Gatlinburg that I frequent out of a need for a good coffee experience. Its called Coffee and Company and it actually has three locations throughout the tourist town. My favorite location tends to be the one located within the shopping center in the middle of town called The Village. So what does a local coffee shop offer that a national franchise one does not? Two things - relationships and preference memory. Allow me to explain. I once got a Starbucks gift card as a gift and tried my hand at going through their drive thru. Pretty simple stuff. The menu was quick and easy to read which is a good thing because I already had two cars behind me waiting to order. So I quickly picked and went through the line. That being said, I forgot to mention that I wanted skim milk instead of the whole milk that is usually used. When I pulled up to the window, the exchange was quick and nonpersonable. Sure, the employee was friendly in the assembly line kind of way but there was nothing more exchanged other than the amount and the thank you. Now, the next day, I went to Coffee and Company and walked up to the counter. The bartista there looked up and said hi and asked me what I wanted to order. I got to ask about the seasonal drinks and got an opinion on the ones that were available. Then I ordered and the bartista remembered that I liked (or rather needed) skim milk and reminded me of the fact. While she prepared my drink, we discussed the weather, the traffic and how things were going at my work. I got my drink and left with a sincere goodbye. Now it may be explained that its because I am now a fully integrated local in this town but I offer you another option. Smaller shops are geared with a different mindset. Its not a handbook of corporate mediocrity that these shops follow. Its about establishing relationships even for the briefest of minutes with the customer. They even go as far as to employ people who live out this concept. Its because of this that you not only get your daily (and in some cases hourly) dose of coffee but you also get a helping of personal interaction...something long missing from better times. To see what I mean, I suggest that if you find yourself in Gatlinburg, TN - go to one of Coffee and Company's shops and experience it for yourself.
